Ah yes, welcome back. How’s the semester treating you so far?

Welcome to HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN TOOTHPASTE and an introduction to oil pulling:

DIY Toothpaste:

I’ve been using this for a couple years now and my teeth love it. It’s super easy to make. Just grab an extra small mason jar and mix the following ingredients together:

2tbs Coconut Oil
1tbs Xylitol
1tsp Baking Soda
15-30 drops Essential Oil (I use Spearmint)

*Note: Xylitol is actually an all natural sweetener that has more benefits for tooth enamel than other substances found in store-bought toothpaste. WebMD says: “Xylitol tastes sweet but, unlike sugar, it is not converted in the mouth to acids that cause tooth decay. It reduces levels of decay-causing bacteria in saliva and also acts against some bacteria that cause ear infections.”

Neat! Also, feel free to adjust this recipe to your liking. I like mine more sweet. Which sounds weird for toothpaste but really, it’s awesome.

Now, I can’t talk about oral hygiene without talking about oil pulling. Oil pulling followed by brushing with my homemade toothpaste is my favorite mouth cleaning method. Afterward, my mouth doesn’t taste like mouth OR mint dipped in chlorine.

Take 1tbs of sesame oil in your mouth and swish it around for 15-20 minutes then spit the oil in the trashcan (so it doesn’t clog your pipes). Be sure not to swallow the oil!! It has pulled all of the bacteria out of your gums and even up from your stomach. You don’t want that going back down. Follow with brushing your teeth. Repeat everyday.

From oilpulling.com: “It is important to understand that during the oil pulling process one’s metabolism is intensified. This leads to improved health. One of the most striking results of this process is the fastening of loose teeth, the elimination of bleeding gums and the visible whitening of the teeth.”
